By drawing the waves I saw the sea where the waves gathered

Simone Hooymans [NL/NO]

The exhibition title: ” By drawing the waves I saw the sea where the waves gathered ” refers to the way Simone Hooymans works. She draws separate elements that are often inspired by natural and organic forms which become part of one universe. There the elements transform over time.

It is also symbolic for the way of believing that humans, flora, and fauna are all connected with one another and together are part of a complete cycle of life and that to damage one is to damage the other.

Her newest video installation “The Chapel of very small Creations” shows an animation tryptich on 3 TV screens of a cave-like universe made out of green soft shaped rock-formations where illuminated creatures are emerging from the darkness.

The cave feels like a sacred place where sudden and inexplicable things happen. Small and gentle creatures are coming out of the water and suddenly appear from the sky. They start to fly around. These fragile and illuminated creations are the divine forces of nature.

All the creations are based on the smallest organism on the planet. To be seen in scientific drawings from biology encyclopedia and from the drawings of Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) a scientist who illustrated the smallest lifeforms that we mostly can’t see with the naked eye. I developed the drawings further and gave character to the lifeforms.

With this installation I like to trigger the sensibility of faith and the longing for spirituality. Does it matter what form we are worshipping ? Can even the smallest life forms give us a divine moment?
